Weekday calculations

The day of the week for a birth date is a Gregorian calendar fact: once year, month, and day are fixed on the civil calendar, the weekday is determined. Folklore (such as Monday’s Child) is optional color on top of that fact.

A hand method: the Doomsday rule

One well-known way to find the weekday without a computer is John Conway’s Doomsday rule. The idea is that many easy-to-remember dates in each year all fall on the same weekday (that year’s “doomsday”). You find that weekday for the year, then count forward or backward from the nearest memorable date to your target day.   1. Find the century anchor. For Gregorian dates, centuries cycle through a short list of anchor weekdays. Common teaching tables use (for years 1900 to 1999) that the century’s base doomsday is Wednesday; for 2000 to 2099 it is Tuesday. Other centuries have their own anchors.
  2. Find the year’s doomsday. Take the last two digits of the year (call it y). Compute how many twelves fit into y, add the remainder, add how many fours fit into that remainder, then add the century anchor, and reduce modulo 7. The result is the weekday shared by that year’s doomsday dates (for example, Sunday = 0 through Saturday = 6 in many write-ups).
  3. Use memorable doomsday dates. In every year, these dates fall on the doomsday weekday: 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12; also 5/9 and 9/5; 7/11 and 11/7; and the last day of February (2/28, or 2/29 in a leap year). January and March use related mnemonics (often taught as “the 3rd of January / 3rd of March in common years,” with a one-day shift in leap years for early months).
  4. Count from a nearby doomsday date to the date you care about. For example, if doomsday is Thursday and you want July 4, note that 7/11 is a doomsday date, so July 4 is seven days earlier: also Thursday. Any other offset is just days modulo 7.

Leap years follow the usual Gregorian rule (divisible by 4, except century years unless divisible by 400). That leap day matters for January and February counts in the Doomsday method.

Worked example sketch: for a date in 2000 to 2099, start from the Tuesday century anchor, adjust for the two-digit year as above to get that year’s doomsday, then walk from the nearest mnemonic date to the birthday. Different teachers number weekdays differently (Sunday-first vs Monday-first); what matters is staying consistent within one system.

What this site does

The calculator does not ask you to run Doomsday by hand. It builds your birth date as a local calendar date in the browser and reads the weekday from the platform Gregorian calendar (the same civil calendar Doomsday is designed to match). We avoid treating bare YYYY-MM-DD strings as UTC, which can shift the calendar day near timezone boundaries. Result: the weekday you see should match what a correct hand method would give for that same Gregorian date.

Leap years and February 29

Leap years follow the Gregorian rule. If you were born on February 29, non-leap-year birthdays are observed on February 28 for previous/next birthday and age-anchor calculations.

Age calculations

Age in years, months, and days uses the browser’s current local date. Hours, minutes, and seconds alive are approximate: birth is treated as local midnight on the entered date because version 1 accepts a date only. The seconds total can update live in the results view.

Moon phase

Moon phase at birth uses a mean synodic-month model evaluated at local noon on the birth date. It is an educational approximation, not an ephemeris-grade astronomical calculation.

World population age share

The estimate of how much of the world’s population is older than you uses a simplified static snapshot of mid-2020s world age structure, rounded from UN World Population Prospects 20245-year age groups. It is not a live census lookup and will drift as the true age structure changes.

The histogram is typically young-heavy (a classic global age pyramid). That mostly reflects higher birth cohorts in many regions plus mortality across the lifespan. It isnot primarily a “Baby Boomers dying out” shape. That bulge is more visible in countries like the United States. Globally, the median age is still around 30.

Western zodiac

Western zodiac signs use common tropical date ranges. Capricorn wraps the year boundary. Exact historical cusp definitions vary.

Chinese zodiac

Chinese zodiac animals follow the traditional twelve-year cycle. The animal changes at Chinese New Year (lunar month 1, day 1), which usually falls between late January and mid-February on the Gregorian calendar. Births before that year’s New Year keep the previous animal. New Year dates for 1800 to 2100 are baked into the calculator from standard lunar conversion tables.

Birthstones and generations

Birthstones follow a modern Western jewelry tradition. Generation labels follow common U.S. popular and research windows (including Pew’s Millennial years of 1981 to 1996). Other writers may shift those edges by a few years; see the generations pages for the map this calculator uses.

Planetary alignment explorer

The planetary alignment page draws a Sun-centered orrery from heliocentric ecliptic longitudes at local noon (astronomy-engine). Disk sizes and orbit spacing are stylized, not true scale. A separate geocentric “sky reading” ranks stations, retrogrades, combust/cazimi states, and major aspects with a simple personal/social/outer weighting. That reading is a light interpretive layer for curiosity, not a natal chart (no birth time or place). Pluto is optional and off by default.

What is factual vs entertainment

  • Factual: weekday, age, day counts, leap-year experience, calendar milestones
  • Approximate / educational: hours/minutes/seconds alive (no birth time), moon phase, world population age share, planetary orrery positions
  • Cultural / entertainment: Western zodiac, Chinese zodiac, birthstones, generational labels
